This Sir Alan was married to a sister of Sir Duncan Wallace of Sundrum, kinsman of the patriot. His great-great-grandson was created Lord Cathcart in 1460 and was Warden of the West March. His great-grandson, Robert, married the heiress of the Cathcarts of Carleton and Killochan, a cadet branch, and fell at Flodden with both his elder and younger brothers. It was this Robert’s grandson, John, who commenced the erection of the present castle in 1586, their earlier fortalice having stood further up the riverside.

The Cathcarts were early supporters of the Reformation, and the builder John’s signature was one of those on the famous ‘Bond’ of 1562 which resulted from John Knox’s visit to Ayrshire to rouse the nobility and gentry to defend the Protestant cause. Again, along with a number of Kennedy lairds, he subscribed another bond five years later to oppose Mary Queen of Scots and Bothwell before the Battle of Carberry Hill. So he certainly took his faith seriously. This of course had its useful side too, when it came to sharing out the vast Church lands taken over by the victorious Reformers.
